Going home
He closed his eyes and when he opened them again, all around him white clouds with a soft rosey shimmer were floating slowly around him, filling the air with a sweet, honey-like fragrance.
“No," Pippin thought as he looked more closely, "Those aren't clouds! They are millions and millions of cherry blossoms.”
At that moment a warm breeze blew and from above more blossoms rained down, stroking Pippin's skin and falling onto his curls. He looked up. His eyes had been wide in amazement, now they grew saucer-like.
Far above his head trees were growing. Their dark brown trunks appeared to grow out of a dense fog, reaching up higher than any trees the Hobbit had ever seen before. Even the massive Mallorn trees of the Golden Wood would look like saplings compared with them. Their kingly crowns were thickly filled with blossoms, despite how many of them were falling down. Pippin could have stood there forever, just staring at them in wonder, but his attention was captured by soft music off in the distance. Unaware of doing so, he walked towards the music and soon he could see a silver streak shimmering on the horizon. He walked on, the silver band growing bigger and bigger, sparkling like diamonds in the sun.
“A waterfall”, Pippin whispered, awestruck, when he had finally reached his goal. He looked right and left, up and down, but there was no beginning nor end to the waterfall. It was an infinite ribbon of silver sparkling water. He could not see through it, but the music was calling to him from within the water. Cautiously he reached out. As his fingertip touched the water a feeling of peace ran through him and the water opened before him like a curtain being drawn away from a window.
Overwhelmed, Pippin looked at the vista before him. This was it. This was what Gandalf had told him about so long ago. White shores and a green country under a swift sunrise.
He stepped onto the shore. The sand was warm and tickled his feet. Pippin laughed wholehardly and started to ran and jump around like a young colt. Eventually, he was lying on his back, breathing hard. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the sunbeams warming his face, oblivious to the many feet silently creeping nearer.
“Surprise!” a chorus of voices suddenly shouted. Pippin sat up with a start. He could not believe his eyes. There they were . . . all the loved and long lost friends and family. Merry, Diamond, Boromir, Frodo, Sam, his parents and sisters, his pets, Bilbo, Beregond and many more . . . standing there, smiling at him.
Pippin jumped up hugging, kissing, laughing, crying and talking all at once.
But far away on the other side of the curtain it was silent. A man was standing with bowed head beside a cold body lying on a bed. Tears were streaming down his face, as he caressed Pippins curls with the back of his fingers.
“Good Bye dear friend,” he whispered. “Until we meet again.”
The End
