The September Challenge stories, with the theme of "Special Occasion--Recipe!Fic; have now been posted. The element for these stories was a particular certain dish assigned to each participant. We've had five entries.

September 2013: Special Occasion Recipe!Fic Challenge

Kitchen Diplomacy by Erulisse (one L) Aragorn has been crowned and has wed his lady love. The elves who acted as her escort, along with dignitaries from many lands, will be feasted at the first State Dinner before they leave Gondor and return to their own lands. Arwen wants everything to be perfect for her family but is having problems getting the kitchen to understand the concept of uncooked vegetables. Exasperated, she calls upon Aragorn for assistance.
Dwarvish Customs by Alfirineth A slice of life story from the childhood of Elladan and Elrohir at the beginning of the Third Age.
A Gift from Afar by Larner A crossover with Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee. A sequel of sorts to Why Mums and Dads Leave Home.
Baking Day at Brandy Hall by Dreamflower Disappointed when a promised outing is cancelled, Frodo and Merry are treated to a morning of baking.
The Tart Taste of Summer by Dreamflower When Bilbo passes through Rivendell after leaving the Shire for the last time, he brings Elrond an unusual gift.

Title: The Tart Taste of Summer
Rating: G
Theme: Special Celebrations (recipe!fic)
Elements: My prompt was a tart; for this story I decided to use the other adjectival meaning of "tart".
Author's Notes: I decided to make this a five-drabble set. It takes place during the months just before and just after the events of "An Unexpected Party".
Summary: When Bilbo passes through Rivendell after leaving the Shire for the last time, he brings Elrond an unusual gift.

Title: Baking Day at Brandy Hall
Rating: G
Theme: Special Celebrations (recipe!fic)
Elements: My prompt was a tart
Author's Notes: In my version of the Shire, education is a family affair. Young children are taught their letters by parents or older siblings (or in this case, a cousin) and when older they receive further education from other adult members of their families and household. I go by the roughly two-thirds age ratio for hobbits, so in this story, Frodo is almost 20 (which is about 11 in "Man-years", and Merry is 6, which is a precocious 4 in "Man-years").
Summary: Disappointed when a promised outing is cancelled, Frodo and Merry are treated to a morning of baking.

Title:Dwarvish Customs
Rating:G
Theme: Special Occasions
Elements:Roast
Author's Notes: For the record, I don’t believe that Elves are vegetarian. Though it’s a common belief among some fans and a ploy for laughs by Peter Jackson and company, I just have never read anything that says that they are. (If you have, please let me know where it is. I would be interested to know.)

Khazad-dûm endured until the middle of the Third Age, though the doors of Moria were shut.

Is it ‘dwarfs’ or ‘dwarves’? I used ‘dwarves’ since that is how it appears in the appendix of LOTR, but for some reason I thought I had seen it ‘dwarfs’ somewhere. Anyone?

Summary: A slice of life story from the childhood of Elladan and Elrohir at the beginning of the Third Age.

The September Challenge: Special Occasions

The September Challenge will have the theme "Special Occasions". Stories should reflect a special time of celebration and be a recipe!fic. (A Recipe!fic is a story in which the recipe for a dish included in the story is given, either separately at the end, or within the body of the story.) The prompt for the challenge will be a type of dish, which must be mentioned in the story. The dish which is your prompt does not have to be the same dish as your recipe, though it can be if you wish.

The September challenge stories will be due Saturday, September 14th and will be revealed on Monday, September 16th. Please tag your story "special occasions" and " '13 September". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page), and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com or virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our September challenge!
