Title:  Too Young
Rating:  G
Theme:  Thinking Outside the Box
Elements:  Word elements:  splinter, pique, angry.
Author's Notes:  I had a hard time coming up with something that I haven't tried before, but eventually I realized that I don't write Dwarves very often, nor do I write women, so I decided to combine the two.  To make it more of a challenge, I decided to restrict the word count.  I always find it difficult to write fixed lengths stories, so I guess that counts as out of the box!
Summary:  A mother deals with an obstinate son who is unhappy about being considered too young for an important task.
Word Count:  400 words according to Microsoft Word.

Title: Reach for the Stars
Rating: G
Theme: Thinking Outside the Box
Elements: random words—die, mellow, juice
Author's Notes: The challenge was to write in a format, style or genre different than what I've written before. Well, I got to thinking about it, and the one thing I had never written was an AU that places the characters in an entirely different milieu. And I started imagining LotR as a sort of steampunkish futuristic space opera. To keep it from getting totally out of hand, I decided to do something else I haven't tried before—each chapter is a different specific fixed length: the first chapter is 100 words, the second, 200, the next, 300, etc. I don't know how well it will do as a story—but it is certainly outside MY box. (Although, well, it's still got hobbits.)
Summary: A familiar story in another time, another place altogether…
Word Count:1,500

Title: The Life And Times of Rushirithir (working title: other ideas from sparx "postcards from the void", "confessions of fire")
Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel
Summary: The beginnings of the Balrog of Moria...the very beginning, that is. And the end. And the middle, of course...though the middle was longest in coming. Go figure..
Elements: barter, yellow, water.
Warning: Dark, aka not at all my usual type, which is, of course, the point of a "Think Outside The Box" challenge.
A/N: I am indebted to Fiondil, whose character Rushirithir the Umaia has been used here as the true name of the Balrog of Moria, with permission. I do not claim that this is what my atar indonyo plans to do with Rushirithir (though it makes a ton of sense for a character named "Fire-Light" in Valarin.) Melkor (albeit named "Mbelkoro", his earliest Quenya name), will figure prominently in the early story.
Manawenuz is the Valarin name of Manwe.
Ulluboz is Valarin for Ulmo.

Title: An Unnamed Nazgûl
Rating:PG
Theme: Think Outside the Box
Elements: lip, plot, spark
Beta:Himben
Author's Notes:"Yet Sauron was ever guileful, and it is said that among those whom he ensnared with the Nine Rings three were great lords of Númenórean race." The Silmarillion, "The Akallabêth", p.320. I imagine that if some were 'great lords' that they wouldn't have necessarily started out evil. They might have justified their taking of the rings of Sauron by thinking of the great good that they could accomplish but, as with the One Ring, the rings were tainted by evil and could not be turned for good; thus, step by step, these great lords fell into darkness. I wondered if they ever remembered their former lives, and even if they did, wouldn't that memory be twisted by their current condition? Who can truly love anyone when they have given themselves over to selfishness, dominion, and ill-gotten power?
Summary:When left to his own devices, what does a Nazgûl think about?
Word Count:284

Title: In the Darkness of the Moon
Rating: PG

Theme: Think Outside the Box
Elements: careful, damp, bottle

Beta: None – all errors and oversights are totally my own

Author’s Notes: Disclaimer: Tolkien built the sand box; I only play with the bucket and shovel that he left for me. No money, profit or non, is made from the publication of this story.

Summary: A Fourth Age mystery of missing children causes King Elessar to ask the assistance of his friends Legolas and Gimli to investigate the case.

I am so far out of the box on this one, I can’t even see it with a star-seeker. I usually only write Silm-based fic – this is Fourth Age. I usually focus on the Feanorians or at least the Noldorin peoples – this has two beloved characters from Lord of the Rings, but no Noldo. I have never written a mystery, here’s one for all of you. Oh…and I write short – I’m the Queen of Drabbles. This one….well, let’s just say it’s anything BUT short. Welcome to my nightmare 

The October Challenge will have the theme "Think Outside the Box!"  Your story for this challenge should be "against your type": if you normally write fluff, write angst; if you normally write Hobbits, try Elves or Dwarves.  Or, if you write mostly dialogue, write an entirely descriptive piece.  Elements for the challenge will be three random words to be included in the story.

The October challenge stories will be due Friday, October 14th, and will be revealed on Sunday, October 16th. Please tag your story "outside the box". Please remember to use the header template on the community profile page, and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com, virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com, or celeritassagittae@gmail.com.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our October challenge!
