On October 29, 2011 I posted the first block in the Fandom in Stitches There and Back Again quilt project. Here's the finished wall-hanging sized quilt.

Quilt
This is the completed project - 13 blocks telling the story of The Hobbit
The blocks are done in a paper-piecing technique, which was new to me. It really allows a lot of detail, which unfortunately you can't see because of the resolution of this picture.

block 13 final
A close up of the central block. The Lonely Mountain is outlined in a dark grey hand embroidery. If you squint, you can see some silver embellishment - a dragon over the mountain, and the river running to the right from the main gates.

ring with enscription

In an effort to tie the blocks together, many of them have some silver embroidery added. The ringspell here, faint because of course during The Hobbit it was never visible at all - but I couldn't resist adding it. Smaug has silver-tipped claws, the water in two blocks has little silver splashes, and the mountain visible outside Bilbo's door has a silver top. (I know, there was no mountain visible, but artistic license.)

bom 11 mithril detail
In the movie, the detail on the mithril vest was gold, but I liked the way the silver looked. The fabric used here (and in Sting) has a lot of silver shine.

Patterns for all the blocks are available at the link above. Starting in January, they will start a LOTR project. I'm really  hoping it will be similar in style and form factor, so I can make a matched set.

(Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with them.)
