Summary: Malevolent and Intelligent? Those two elements brought Morgoth back from his holiday to demand that he be at the center of this poem with a spark of humor. Of course I listened to his directive…

Author’s Notes: Disclaimer: Tolkien built the sand box; I only play with the bucket and shovel that he left for me. No money, profit or non, is made from the publication of this story.

In Angband that Night

Swords clashed in the Grand Salle,
Where bodies hung and sometimes swayed,
Sounds of screams from the dungeons raised,
Evil walked Angband that night…

Morgoth paced around the room,
While Sauron hummed a sonorous tune,
Dinner awaited, they'd sit to it soon,
Hunger ruled Angband that night…

"Am I intelligent?" Morgoth asked,
"or just merely malevolent?" he mused … then fast
he turned to gaze at Sauron's cat,
Hunting in Angband that night…

Held in her jaws, bewhiskered and bristling,
A blood-spattered mouse, fur tattered, and struggling.
Morgoth chuckled and laughed, broadly smiling.
Torture stalked Angband that night...

“Just look at her grace,” Morgoth gloated, hands rubbing.
“See there the blood and the fear of her plaything.
She rules all of Angband with claws and teeth sharpening.
Blood runs in Angband tonight.”

The two of them leaned back against a stone wall,
And watched the cat's play - mouse throw and mouse fall,
And finally, heard the crunchy last call.
Death walked in Angband that night.

LOL! I can just see this:

The two of them leaned back against a stone wall,
And watched the cat's play - mouse throw and mouse fall,
And finally, heard the crunchy last call.

What a perfect ending!

Sad but true: cats would get along with Morgoth and Sauron. Provided with enough small squeaky things to bully and torture, that is.

Too true--it doesn't need to be a cat demon, even an ordinary cat will sometimes behave like a true denizen of Angband.

Shivery, rather breathy laughs with this one, I think! Most interesting use of your elements! Congratulations!
