2.

The next day...

Thranduil stood outside the Hall of Fire, noticing something disturbing that caught his attention at once: there was a mob of dwarves with elves near the door.

The king wondered what it meant and was about to open the door, when Galdor came to his side.

"What is it, Galdor?" the king asked without looking at his guard.

"I have no idea if you like this change, though I know that I do," Galdor teased his friend.

"Is there anything I should worry about?" Thranduil asked suspiciously.

"It depends," Galdor replied, staring at the king for a moment. "It is up to you. I do wonder how you will react to it…" With that, he left with a wink.

Thranduil sighed heavily before he opened the door.

Surprised to see elves nursing little dwarves, reading them stories from his books - those books he had painstakingly collected all those years.

The king hurried over quickly, fearing that those menaces would destroy and rip apart his delicate treasures.

"They will not do anything that’d destroy your books." A familiar voice sounded suddenly.

Thranduil spun around, his mouth open in surprise when he noticed the figure that approached.

"G… Glóin?" Thranduil asked, recovering quickly, "What are you doing here?"

"My son, Gimli, has asked me to come. Besides, I had received an invitation from King Legolas himself," Glóin replied, grinning at Thranduil as he continued, "Imagine my surprise when I read it! I could not believe my own eyes; I would have thought that Gandalf had something to do with it."

Thranduil could feel that wave of rage surging within him, but before he could do anything, he felt the dwarf's grip on his wrist.

"I would not advise you to do that," Glóin spoke, looking fixedly at the king, "I do not know what came upon your son to make these changes, but one thing I know: war changes everything; war opened his eyes."

Thranduil had no answer to that much as he searched for something to break the stiff silence.

"Have you not noticed something different about your son?" Glóin asked.

Thranduil stared at the dwarf, not knowing what he was expecting. Was there anything different about Legolas?

Glóin opened the door into the inner room, wanting the king to see what his son had being doing in his short capacity as king.

Thranduil observed how the warm light filled the entire hall. Little groups of elves and dwarves were sitting contentedly on the ground, reading the stories one to another.

He gasped in surprise. "It is so beautiful and…" he continued, "He did a good job in the hall; I never thought that he would do this."

"Neither did I guess that this would happen," Glóin agreed, sighing as he continued, "We both did not handle things right but now times have changed."

"You are right, Master Glóin, times have indeed changed," Thranduil nodded thoughtfully. Kneeling beside the dwarf, he bowed to him.

As Thranduil rose, Glóin returned the bow respectfully.

Oh, happy times with happy young ones. (Given that they are young ones, I can wonder just how long those happy times will actually last.) But I really liked this.

A positive change for the relations between dwarves and elves.

It is nice to see Elves and Dwarves getting on together!

Definitely something Legolas would instigate :)

Mmmm...these are both very nice. I really liked the one with Pippin and the armor! I adore the idea that his fresh attitude and the ability to make Beregond more light-hearted is seen to them as a sign of hope!

Thank you! I'm so glad that you liked them! I do think that in that gloomy city, Pippin's "unquenchable cheerfulness" and open friendliness would have brought hope and cheer to all who befriended him.

These are both so nice. I especially liked the Pippin one because I very recently felt an actual mail shirt and it surprised me how heavy it is. I feel for the little hobbit!

I'm familiar with mail shirts as well. Several of my SCA fighter friends prefer chain mail. I've picked up more than one hauberk, and been astounded at how heavy they are. Yet I've been assured by the fighters that it is far lighter to *wear* it than to *carry* it--with the weight distributed over the shoulders and body, it helps. And it's cold and slinky, and after it's been worn a while, it smells like rusty sweat--or sweaty rust, LOL!

The Pippin-in-armor story is so lovely! I loved Beregond and Targon's reactions to hearing Pippin refer to Boromir, and Pippin's reaction to his armor. Especially his reaction to the boots!

Well, you know, he shows up unexpectedly one day, and by the next they have gear and armor ready for him at the armory? I've always wanted to fill that gap.

I think being in the colors of the Tower Guard would certainly make Pippin think of Boromir, and all he'd been taught, and Beregond and Targon would appreciate that. And I'm quite sure he would *not* have been able to fit in those boots! LOL!

“As black and as dark as the times are, for some reason I cannot help but think our luck may have turned, to have such a one among us.”

That's just wonderful. :D

I think of how the people responded to Pippin, calling him the "Prince of Halflings", and how quickly he made friends with Beregond and Bergil. He must have been a breath of fresh air to the Gondorians.

I'm like the others here, delighted by the Pippin tale, and the thought that his very presence brought light and hope to his comrades in arms. The Dragon drabble just made tears come to my eyes.

I honestly think that Pippin was what some people call a "ray of sunshine"--his "unquenchable cheerfulness" as Merry called it must have been something so fresh and new to these weary soldiers.

It just came to me, how it would strike Sam and Frodo, to see the Dragon like that.

Yes... Pippin at the armoury... delightful. I think we all need a Pippin-ray of sunshine in our lives. I can actually picture a little ray of light bouncing around the darkness of the grey-tinged "White City."

And I liked the Dirty Dragon drabble. Interesting contrast between Sam and Frodo. Sam seems to see what's left of the Dragon... the important parts... and the rest can be replaced and rebuilt. Frodo appears to see only what's lost, like he's lost the ability to focus on what's still there.

Both very nice. I like stories that show Pippin's unquenchable spirit. But the second one brought tears to my eyes.

“It’s not your fault, Mr. Frodo.”

Dead on. And just as deadly to my heart. I was thinking the same thing as I read it. Frodo would feel responible. *sob*

Poor Frodo, with his conscience scoured to the quick by the Ring, would I think, have blamed himself for every single thing that went wrong in the Shire while he was gone.

I enjoyed these very much. I still am amazed at how anyone can write a drabble and put so much into so few words. I could just hear Sam reassuring Frodo.

I'm glad you liked them--I'm having good fun with them.

Drabbles are interesting. They are a bit of a challenge, but they are also easy in some ways--you don't have to worry about plot and such, with a drabble.

Frodo should not worry about the Green Dragon. Everything will be all right.

Well, no, he shouldn't, and it will. But it wouldn't be easy to convince him of that.
