There and Back Again


In the beginning, Adventure didn’t seem so bad. Riding his sturdy little pony behind the Dwarves and Gandalf, he enjoyed the unfamiliar hillsides and farms, sunshine, birdsong, the freshening breeze of early spring, and a merry old inn.

Then came the trolls.

He put that behind him in Rivendell, but goblins, Gollum, wolves, spiders --most of all, the Dragon and the battle afterward made him eager to see home once more.

Then he returned to the Shire. Telling of his time away, he found painted a brighter picture with his words. Adventure didn’t seem so bad at journey’s end.

So far they really are! My only thing with the "Leaving Rivendell" CD is that the voices in the hobbit songs don't sound very hobbity--I imagine hobbit voices as being a bit higher and lighter. But the songs themselves are delighful. I have not yet finished listening to "In Elven Lands" but what I've heard so far is marvelous!

Ah..."Leaving Rivendell". I played C.L.'s reading of several of the poems to the kids in my Tolkien club...lots of shivers and wide eyes. And one or two positively unholy grins. :)

Yes, the first thing on there--his reading of the Ring inscriptions--*whoa* I could just see him as Saruman, reciting that in Orthanc, his dark eyes glittering and gloating--

Ooooh, I love "Leaving Rivendell"! Came across it purely by chance in some deserted corner of the 'Exported CDs' section of the local music store. I remember being frightened out of my wits when Christopher Lee started speaking the Ring verses, though ^_^ I had the music on loud and his voice just boomed out. My favourite is the one of Nimrodel and the Elven hymn at the very end.

Now I really want "In Elven Lands", but I doubt it can be found here. :-( Bagpipe music is just lovely, though.
