Author: Pearl Took
Title: Three Drabbles
Theme: light and shadow
Elements: 3 different gap fillers that are listed at the begining of each drabble
Rating: G
Author's Notes:I ended up requesting elements four different times and couldn't come up with a regular story for any of them. Fortunately, I suddenly had drabbles for three of them.
Summary: Drabble 1 - Merry and Fredegar on the way to Crickhollow.
Drabble 2 - Pippin liking to be out at night.
Drabble 3 - Aragorn and the Hobbits in Bree.
Word Count: The stories, without element descriptions and titles, are 100 words each
First gap-filler:
Merry and Fredegar on the way to Crickhollow:
What did Fatty and Merry talk about on their journey to Buckland with Frodo's things?
Along the Way
It’s a long drive from Hobbiton to Crickhollow. A slow drive when you are in a wagon loaded with furniture instead of a lightweight buggy.
We wish it was going faster. We wish it was going slower.
Or not happening at all.
Fredegar and I chat. Reminisces. Sunny days and gloomy.
Good times with Frodo.
“We’ll be fine, Fatty.” I assure him.
“Of course. Only off to see the Elves. Not a long journey”
“Only off to Rivendell.” Behind my smile I worry. Bilbo had Dwarves who knew the way. We’re supposed to have Gandalf; but Gandalf hasn’t shown up.

Second gap-filler:
Pippin liking to be out at night:
It is said by Frodo that he thought Pippin liked to walk in the dark. Write a story about a time he has done that before. What did he like about it, what did he experience, did his parents like him tramping around at night, was he alone or with Frodo?
I don't answer all of these questions ;-)
Night Call
Pippin ran across the open ground of the farm yard, through one of the barn doors and out the other. He ran out into the upper pasture, stopped, spread his arms wide and threw his head back to look up at the night sky. The stars looked close. The stars surrounded him.
Sometimes the night was scary. Sometimes the shadows were heavy with dreadful fears. But other nights light beckoned to him.
“Night. Night. Beautiful night, send your luck to me!”
The guardians of the night heard his happy call.
There!
One fell! Another!
Pippin danced with the falling stars.

Third gap-filler:
Aragorn and the Hobbits in Bree:
After the ponies were stolen in Bree, Strider asked the hobbits "How much are you prepared to carry on your backs?" and it was Pippin who answered "As much as we must." Pippin was trying to look tough for this Man who was to be their guide. What was Strider's impression of Pippin? Did Pippin's willingness to carry his load change Strider's impression?
Hope
I had been told to watch for two Hobbits, but four took leave of old Bombadil.
“. . . the name of Baggins must not be mentioned. I am Mr. Underhill . . .”*
Two names I knew to listen for. I followed them into Bree.
They are all naïve. Merry’s walk in the dark. Pippin regaling the crowd recounting Bilbo’s farewell party; Frodo, cavorting about on a table.
The Inn has been breached, the ponies and horses are gone.
“How much can you carry?”
“As much as we must.”**
Pippin has surprised me.
There might yet be hope.
