No Regrets


All his life, Merry had known: Pippin was “the impetuous one”; he was “the cautious one”. He had been for as long as he could remember, recalling his parents’ funny stories of his plans to steal from his bed to Frodo’s as a faunt, the teasing when he packed early for a trip, or spent hours studying maps. For the most part, caution worked, plans bore fruit. Once only, he’d been impetuous. Once only, he’d thrown caution away and acted out of the passion of the moment.

But he’d never regret the instant he’d decided Éowyn should not die alone.

Wonderful! This was Merry's most heroic moment, although his plans and thoughtfulness and care were just as heroic in their own way. I loved this :)

It was. And really, though Merry thought he was impetuous there, his whole life had lead up to it-- his loyalty, his bravery and his gallantry, his essential decency and sense of fairness. Truly, I can't see him responding any other way.

I love the way this story keeps us apart from the final act, building slowly until we reach the moment of Decision. At the end, it feels like it's poised to rush headlong and impetuous into an adventure, and then it cuts off, leaving imagination to do the rest. Lovely!

Wonderful! I loved the technique you applied here. The way you emphasized Merry's cautious nature, but then showed a contrasting instance was very well done. Great piece.

That's true. For Pippin, impetuous usually was the right choice (his good decisions were impetuous as well as his bad ones) but that was not how Merry usually did things. Still, he knows it was the right choice that time!
