A FATHER’S LOVE

“Father! Father, don’t leave me! Please, I’ll be good; don’t leave me.”

Legolas and Gimli paused as they walked in the Steward’s Garden. “That’s Faramir. Can you see him?” asked Gimli.

Legolas was already moving toward the stately stand of trees. “There, under those trees over here. He seems deeply asleep, should we wake him?”

“I think we must. You see how upset he is; sure it isn’t a nightmare, but it isn’t pleasant either.”

“He’s such a private man; he won’t appreciate our hearing this.”

“All the more reason to wake him.” Saying as much, Gandalf reached over to take Faramir’s shoulder in hand. “Wake, lad, awake; ‘tis only a dream.”

Legolas looked at Gimli, pointing at Gandalf {when did he get here} written across his face. Gimli shrugs, {wizards.}

Faramir’s eyes fluttered slightly, and then opened wide. “He wanted me!”

“Of course he did. I told you when he sent you back out to Osgiliath; he loved you and would remember it before the end.” Waving his fingertips at Legolas, Gandalf suggested that e be given some privacy with the distraught younger man. Bowing slightly, Gimli and he left.”What was it that you dreamed?”

“I saw my father standing over me waving a flaming sword, then a flash of pain; and he’s further away. I called to him, he begged someone not to take me. He begged.” Sobs shook Faramir, “He begged to keep me.”

“Yes, yes he did. But you needed healing. And the City needed her leader; he just couldn’t see the glimmer of hope still hanging there for him to catch onto.”

“I remember what Beregond told me of that night.”

"…Faramir moaned and called on his father in his dream.

Denethor started as one waking from a trance, and the flame died in his eyes, and he wept; and he said: 'Do not take my son from me! He calls for me.'

'He calls,' said Gandalf. 'But you cannot come to him yet. For he must seek healing on the threshold of death, and maybe find it not. Whereas your part is to go out to the battle of your City, where maybe death awaits you. This you know in your heart.' (RotK, Bk. V, Ch. VII, "The Pyre of Denethor")

“And you are right, he couldn’t see any hope; he had only seen hope in Boromir’s return, he never thought of any other outcome. But at the end, he did love me, he wanted us together.”

“Do you want to be ‘together’ if it means you must die?”

“Yes, I would like to be together with Boromir, father and mother; I just believe it isn’t the right time. I have things to accomplish in this life. Yes, you did the right thing keeping us apart. I just wish… Oh well wishes are for candles and wells.”

“What can I do to help you with this knowledge?”

“I think next year, maybe even the year after, when people aren’t so raw from the losses f this war; we need a day to celebrate family. The unity of kinship. Knowing that you are loved and wanted, maybe even needed.”

“We’ll make it a royal decree, the third Sea-day of every Narie.” Aragorn stepped into view.

“How came you to be here?”asked Faramir, struggling to straighten his garments, bow, and rearrange his hair all at the same time.

“Legolas and Gimli said you seemed a little upset. Thought it might be a good idea to have ‘healing hands’ close. So I came out, you seem to have handled the problem quite well, let’s go find some lunch.”

“Lunch!”

“Yes, food.”

“Pippin, Merry, you fools, we weren’t going to let on we were here, remember?”

{Gentle??? Hobbits?} Snicker, snicker.

“Well, since we now know you’re here, would you care to join us for lunch? My cook tells me that the chef has found five new ways to prepare mushrooms. I’m sure we could have at least one demonstrated.”

Nods breaking out in the group, Frodo answered. “As long as you ask so nicely, we would be honored to join the three of you for luncheon. Might we invite you to supper?”

As the group moved away, Faramir glances up and mutters to himself.

“I’ve got to get a better gate; everyone seems to be able to wander through here!”

Nancylea, I really like this little story, and had great fun reading it! Faramir is a special man with a great deal of passion for life and for those he cares about, and I always enjoy stories that include him. I'm also partial to seeing the Fellowship together, so this was a double treat - thank you!

Oh! And thanks for the sweet comments about Tulip, I'm very pleased you enjoy seeing her and wee Pip in my stories!!

That's very sweet of you to say, Nancy. Remember that every writer started out somewhere, though. And, I'm glad you overcame those feelings and gave it a try - aren't you glad you did?? I remember feeling like that in the very beginning, and since then I have met and worked with many wonderful and supportive people!

Welcome aboard!!!
