Before their Eyes

The Hobbits of the Shire stared in fascination. Long had they said “When the King returns” and meant Never! But today King and Queen stood upon the Brandywine Bridge and gave honor to the Mayor, the Master, and the Thain and their Ladies, and laughed at Pippin Took’s sallies, nodded at Sam Gamgee’s aphorisms, and spoke of future plans with Merry Brandybuck. When the King lifted a glass of wine in honor of Frodo Baggins, though, all were surprised to see tears in his eyes, and grief on the Queen’s face.

But he cared not for the Shire, they thought.

“Those are splendid!” exclaimed Pippin. “The blue is like Frodo’s eyes! And,” he leaned over confidingly, “they like to write things.”

This is so adorable! Omigosh, I was worn out by the little tyke's boundless energy.

With a laugh, Frodo scooped him up and settled him atop his shoulders. “That was a most splendid, very excellent hug, Peregrin Took! I think you must give the best hugs of any five year old in the Shire!”

Merry looked briefly disgruntled at having Pippin taken from him, but he looked up at them, Pippin’s chin resting on top of Frodo’s dark curls, and laughed. There were his two best cousins in all the world.

Awwwww. *cousin-fic love*

Awww... this is adorable!

One thing I wanted to ask you for quite a while is how you calculate the ages from hobbits/humans. I usually subtract about a third of the hobbit's age to get the human equivalent.

Eeee! This is wonderful! Based on our conversation this morning I figured that you would write about a hobbit leaving faunthood behind but since you wrote Pippin I'm doubly happy! :D

I love the cousins and the siblings here - I'm glad you show Pippin's relationships with both, as well as his parents. This is so sweet, especially the gift-giving scene. Just what I needed to unwind tonight! :D

That was adorable! I loved Pearl's reaction to the cartwheels out where everyone could see. This was a lovely bedtime story for me tonight.

A charming story, thank you for sharing it. I'm sure the Professor would approve.

I loved the way in which Pippin referred to Merry as ‘My Merry.’

I was well and truly lost whilst reading. Est trots off with a *big toasty grin* on her face.

What a lovely story. I'd love to see Pippin and his sisters turning cartwheels. And the image of Pippin sitting on the floor hiding his face while his gifts were opened is one that will remain with me, as well as the one of the cousins putting Merry's puzzle together and Pip falling asleep beside them.

<<“Doesn’t he ever get tired?” she asked, not really expecting an answer. It was a question various members of Pippin’s family asked themselves two or three times every day.>>

LOL. I can see this rhetorical question coming up a lot; and I like how this slice of life of a special day fic ends with Pippin actually getting tired after that comment, and falling asleep next to Merry and Frodo.

Awww. Lovely. :)
