Summary: Finwë and Fëanor after Miriel's death
Word Count: 100

Sometimes the boy Fëanor wakes to an empty world. Corridors are full of dim shifting shadows. He makes his way to his father's room. Relief like a burst of light: he is there. He buries his head in his father's chest: he is everything.

*

For months after Miriel died, Finwë felt that he and his son were unspeakably alone, shut out, their grief uncomprehensble to others.

Then, little by little, old desires came back. Friends. The pleasure of a thing well-made. Love. Children he'd never have.

What light will there be for you, when I am not yours alone?

Oh, this is so heart-wrenching! Feanor's beginning to lose his father even before Indis gets in on the picture, and Finwe knows it. And we know it's the case later on, but somehow this drabble makes it even clearer that Feanor simply won't understand.

Oh, what an ironic question! And it gives a whole new layer of meaning to Feanor's quest to make-- and then to recover-- the Silmarils. Was it all done to make up for his father's abstraction?

I will repeat Periantari's words - sad and poignant. Well done!

That is beautiful, the first two lines especially so touching, his father everything to the bereaved boy; and then Finwe, whose bereavement gradually lessens as the world comes back. Oh dear. Thank you!

Grimly insightful. I like the way this sets up future actions, and I like the light and dark playing against each other during the first section. Already, Feanor sees the world in sharp contrasts.

Love this! Especially the two viewpoints and how they conflict. ♥

This is really sad, both with their grief at losing Miriel and because we know what's to come.

Ooh--a most insightful look at this dynamic. I like it very much--it says so much for Feanor's future perceptions.

Yes, how many among the immortal Elves would understand their grief? Beautiful, Adlanth!

The shape and texture of things to come. Mourning ends, and it must have been a harsh lesson for that little boy.

Alas for Fëanor, and so much foreshadowed in the last line.

I like the two viewpoints on this one event and what is shown. It also makes me rethink the desire to create, and then take back, the Silmarils. It's also heartbreaking, to have this glimpse of their grief.
