January 2014 Potluck Challenge

Once again we are having our annual January Potluck Challenge. This is your opportunity to finish up an unfinished challenge from 2013, or you can choose a leftover prompt from one of our last year's challenges. To participate, leave a comment to either claim the number of the prompt you wish to write, or in the case of April, July, and August, follow the instructions to leave your comment. The prompts are behind the cut. We mods will try to strike out the claimed numbers as soon as we can, but do take a moment to check the comments, just in case someone else has already claimed it before we can strike it out. You can also leave a comment to mention if you decide to finish up a story you were already signed up for last year.

Stories are due in the queue the weekend of January 20, and will be revealed on Monday, January 23.

This is the beginning of a brand new year, so I hope we will have a LOT of participants this month!

September Challenge: Seventy-five!!

In honor of the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit on September 21, 1937, this month's challenge will featured the number "75" in honor of the occasion. The number "seventy-five" must be used in the story. Your prompt will be a quote from The Hobbit, which you should include in the story. However, stories do not have to be set in that book-- entries may, as usual, be set in any of Tolkien's writings and feature any of his characters or races.

The September challenge stories will be due Friday, September 14th and will be revealed on Sunday, September 16th. Please tag your story "seventy-five" and " '12 September". Please remember to use the header template on the community profile page, and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line (e.g. "Frodo's Amazing Adventure by Mary Sue").

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com, virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com, or celeritassagittae@gmail.com.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our September challenge!

Title: Tilion's Chase
Rating: General
Inspiration: But Tilion went with uncertain pace, as yet he goes, and was still drawn towards Arien, as he shall ever be; so that often both may be seen above the Earth together, or at times it will chance that he comes so nigh that his shadow cuts off her brightness and there is a darkness amid the day.

Media: Photo's & photoshopbrushes
Artist's Notes: Original photography by Vivek Chugh, Mag Stefan and Havord. A few brushes were used from Annika von Holdt, noctuidae vortex, Bokeh Brushes by Obsidian Dawn. The rest is my own handiwork. This is a companion piece to 'The Sun-maiden's raiment' my other challenge entry.

Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour.

LOTR Community Challenges: Art Challenge!

We are pleased to announce our first Art Challenge! Because this is our first challenge, we are simply asking for artists to create art: any media is welcome! All we ask this time around is that it be a new project.

Choose a favorite passage or quotation from any of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, and picture it for us! All art must be rated G or PG. See our ratings guidelines here! After the challenge, art will be archived at Many Paths to Tread. We hope that there will be enough pictures to use as prompts for next month's fic challenge! So there is a good chance your picture or other piece will serve as inspiration for someone else.

Upload pictures of your project to your favorite photo-sharing site (Photo-bucket, Flickr, LJ scrapbook, etc.), and then post the picture to the community by the weekend of January 20, for reveal on January 22.

Include the following header:

"Inspiration" is your passage or quotation, and you may use your notes to give any explanations you want to about your media or the process you used in making your project.

Tag your post "art: january 2012"

ETA BTW, I forgot to mention, please put the following in the subject line: Art: Title of piece by your name

That's so we don't get confused if there are stories in the queue also.

Please comment here if you would like to participate!
