This came to me yesterday (April 21) and I thought I would post it since it goes with "An Essay on Life." It is a look at part of the story from a different point of view.

Title: Grand Pas (sans d'action)
Rating: G
Theme: Renewal (birds)
Elements: A robin
Author's Notes: A grand pas is a suite of individual dances in a ballet which basically shows off the principal dancer - usually it doesn't contribute to the ballet - one that does is called a grand pas d'action. This was going to be longer... but I didn't get chance to carry it on hence it is 'sans d'action' - without action.
Summary: Robins don't really belong in spring - but Pippin is convinced they're still around!
Word Count: a measly 230 words

Title: “Hark, How Blithe the Throstle Sings”
Theme: Renewal
Elements: Bird: a song thrush also known as a throstle
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Quite some time ago, [livejournal.com profile] lindahoyland requested a time-stamp story from me to take place a few weeks or months after my story "Good King Elessar", before the King returns to Gondor. I made a start on it, but ran out of steam, and had to put it aside to wait for further inspiration. And then it seemed to me to fit perfectly with this month’s theme of renewal, so I decided to finish it for this challenge. The title is taken from a poem by William Wordsworth.
Summary: Young Frodo Gamgee, serving the King for a year in Annúminas is a bit homesick, but a visit from his father cheers him up.
Word Count: 5,074

Title:  Home Thoughts, from Abroad
Rating:  G
Theme:  Birds
Elements:  The Chaffinch
Author's Notes:  This tale is based on imagery in Robert Browning's poem of the same name.  Since it was through this poem that I first even heard of the chaffinch, it immediately came to mind when I received my element.  The suitability of the poem is almost uncanny: it's set in April, looking forward to May, and it was written while Browning was living in Italy on account of the delicate health of his wife.  If the Shire is around the latitude of England, then Gondor is around the latitude of Italy.  The reader is highly encouraged to read the poem in order to trace the imagery as it appears in the fic.
Summary:  Springtime in Gondor makes Pippin--and Sam--realize what they miss most.
