Show Don't Tell
For this month's challenge, writers will create a story that includes no dialogue. Your prompt will be a gesture or action that one of your characters must perform during the story.

The March challenge stories will be due Friday, March 21, and will be revealed on Sunday, March 23. (Because this announcement is late, we have built in an automatic one week extension.) Please tag your story "show don't tell" and " '14 march". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page),  and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com or virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our March challenge!

Here are the links to the January 2014 Potluck Challenge stories! As is our tradition every January, each author either chose a "leftover" prompt from one of 2013's challenges, or chose to complete a challenge they had begun earlier.

We had nine stories this month!

The Standard Revealed - by Larner
The first one to serve as standard bearer for Aragorn fell in battle.

Haven by Linaewen
Boromir and Faramir look out from the walls of Dol Amroth and talk about Elves.

Of Spices and Stewed Goat, by Rhymer
Faramir receives an unexpected visitor in the wilds of Ithilien, leading to an afternoon of wine, cooking and memories.

An Oath Fulfilled, by Rhymer
Lost in the darkness, the Dead have waited three thousand years for the Heir of Isildur to come to them, and now he is come. He is come.

Garnet and Gold, by Rhymer
Long after the end of the Fourth Age, a unique treasure is uncovered in what was once the Shire. This is the story of some of those who owned it, and why they cherished it, and how they passed it on.

Return to Moria by Erulisse (one L)
Legolas is getting ready to sail and has been invited to see Thranduil one final time. Taking Gimli with him, they ride to Moria following a route that Thranduil had suggested, but Moria holds many surprises for them. Gimli has a surprise as well, but is keeping it well hidden from his friend.

Messin about on the River - Linda Hoyland
Aragorn has a surprise for Faramir

A Hearty Meal by Linaewen
The men stationed at Gondor's Nardol beacon outpost prepare their evening meal.

Harsh Words by Linaewen
As Faramir prepares to depart for Osgiliath, he finds himself regretting the harsh words that have passed between himself and his father.

Thank you all for participating! And I hope everyone will come and check out the stories!

"Fanon is any element that is widely accepted among fans, but has little or no basis in canon." ~Fanlore wiki

The Tolkien fandom and fan fiction have existed for decades and, in that time, have accumulated their share of fanons. From much-beloved (but noncanonical) pairings, to aspects of a character's appearance, to traits and historical events of a specific group or family, we all regularly encounter and most of us use fanons in our own writing and art. For February's "February Fanon-buster" challenge, select a much-loved or much-loathed fanon and write a story that does the opposite of that fanon. Your element will be three random words to be included in the story.
The February challenge stories will be due Friday, February 14th and will be revealed on Sunday, February 16th. Please tag your story "fanon buster" and " '14 february". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page), and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line:

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com or virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com.
I hope we'll have lots of participants for our November challenge!

Because I was somewhat late in responding to requests (I apologize--I thought I had already answered them) we will have an extension for the January Potluck Challenge. I am moving the reveal date to January 27. You may enter your stories into the community queue at any time before that day.

There are still a few stories yet to place in the Moderator's queue! I do hope all stories will be ready. Your stories, if not already posted, need to be posted at here at the comm by 5PM Central Standard Time on Tuesday December 31, so that we can reveal them.

Once again we are having our annual January Potluck Challenge. This is your opportunity to finish up an unfinished challenge from 2013, or you can choose a leftover prompt from one of our last year's challenges. To participate, leave a comment to either claim the number of the prompt you wish to write, or in the case of April, July, and August, follow the instructions to leave your comment. The prompts are behind the cut. We mods will try to strike out the claimed numbers as soon as we can, but do take a moment to check the comments, just in case someone else has already claimed it before we can strike it out. You can also leave a comment to mention if you decide to finish up a story you were already signed up for last year.

Stories are due in the queue the weekend of January 20, and will be revealed on Monday, January 23.

This is the beginning of a brand new year, so I hope we will have a LOT of participants this month!

This is a promotion for another community. Since we are not going to do a Big Bang this year, the mods at the other comm asked if we minded if they did one. I don't see why not!

Just a reminder to all participants: You have until December 20 to let us know if you will need a pinch-hitter. If you fail to notify us in time you will not be allowed to participate in future exchanges. If you let us know ahead of time there is no problem. Your story needs to be in the queue by the morning of December 31st. For clarity's sake, we will say by 9AM Central Time (you can check here to see how your time zone compares. If you have a few last minute things to tweak and think you may be a few hours later, e-mail me and let me know. If you finish early, you can go ahead and post: the queue is locked.

We're going to screen comments here--you can post a comment with a progress report or let us know if you need a pinch-hitter.

For those of you who volunteered to pinch-hit, we will let you know as soon as we get notified if we might need you. Be aware that it is possible you may not have very long to write your story!

2013 LOTR Community Challenges Yule Fic Exchange

yulefic2013banner02

It's time to start considering the annual Yule Fic Exchange! This has been a tradition of our community from the first year, when we were only on Yahoo! and one that we cherish. Writing for others is a special kind of pleasure.

We will be doing the Yule Fic Exchange this year the same way as the last couple of years.
Please send us your requests only in a comment to this post using this format:

All comments will be screened. Sign-ups will remain open until Friday, October 31.

When the sign-up period is ended, a new post will be made; only the requests will be posted. You will then post a comment with the request you wish to write. Post a comment as well for your second choice. State clearly which is first or second choice.

First choices will be crossed out as the mods see the requests come in. If two people request the same one before the mods have a chance to cross it out, the second person will get their second request.

In the remote possibility that both your choices are already chosen, we will contact you to make a third choice.

Once all stories are claimed, you will be e-mailed with the name of the person you are writing for. You may then check your recipient's own stories and so forth to get an idea of what she likes. Do not contact your recipient however, as authors will be revealed when the stories are revealed.

Story Guidelines and Exchange Rules:

1. Everyone who posts a request is expected to also write a request.

2. Stories will be a minimum of 1,000 words and a maximum of 5,000, although we will not quibble if you go over or under just a little bit.

3. All stories should be rated between G and PG-13 and fit the community ratings guidelines.

4. Stories will be posted directly to the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community, where they will remain hidden in the moderator's queue until the reveal date. The stories will be revealed on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2013). You may finish and post your story early, although we ask that you wait until after November 17, in order to make sure that all the November stories have cleared the moderator's queue.

5. Use this template as a header when posting your story:

Make sure to put your story title AND your name in the subject line! Please tag your story "2013 yule fic exchange".

If your story is incorrectly formatted, we may ask you to re-post.

If you have any troubles posting please contact a mod for help.

6. If you are unable to write the story or to finish it for some reason, please notify the mods by December 20, so that we may assign a pinch hitter. Anyone who fails to do so will not be allowed to participate in future exchanges!

7. On January 2, you will be free to post your stories elsewhere. All of the exchange stories will also be archived at Many Paths to Tread.

8. Remember to read your story and thank your author!

Suggestions for your requests

While you certainly want to request the sort of story you want to read, try to be as general as possible. A request that reads more like a story summary is less likely to be chosen:

"I want a Fellowship story in which they are attacked by ruffians and the hobbits are trapped in a tree by wargs and Gimli is injured." may be too specific, and people may feel trapped by the request.

Being more general is better. For instance:

"I would like an adventurous Quest story, perhaps involving ruffians."

Or

"I would like LOTR era hobbits. I would like a happy story showing them celebrating Yuletide."

Or

"I would like dwarves. The story can have drama but needs an up-beat ending."

Or

"I would like an angsty hurt/comfort story about Maglor".

Or

"I would enjoy a story exploring the theme of giving."

PLEASE NOTE!

Since the comments are being screened, please do not post questions here. We can't answer without unscreening. There will be a separate post where you can ask any questions about this year's exchange.

Our apologies, we forgot to change the setting to have the comments screened (thank you [livejournal.com profile] iavalir for letting us know). They should be screened now!

Here is the post for questions!

The October Challenge will have the theme "One Picture is Worth a Thousand Words". Prompts for the challenge will be an image sent to the participant which should inspire the story. Stories do not have to be exactly a thousand words, though they should come fairly close.

The October challenge stories will be due Monday, October 14th and will be revealed on Wednesday, October 16th. Please tag your story "one picture a thousand words" and " '13 october". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page),  and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line

To all my friends at LOTR Gfic, our challenges and MPTT I'm sorry to say but I'm going to be taking a hiatus of unknown length. RL has snuck-up on me and I find I don't have the time to give to the groups that they need from a Mod. You are all dear people and I ask that you take care of my dearest friends who are still the group's moderators.
Thank you all for everything,
Pearl Took
