Here are the links to the January 2014 Potluck Challenge stories! As is our tradition every January, each author either chose a "leftover" prompt from one of 2013's challenges, or chose to complete a challenge they had begun earlier.

We had nine stories this month!

The Standard Revealed - by Larner
The first one to serve as standard bearer for Aragorn fell in battle.

Haven by Linaewen
Boromir and Faramir look out from the walls of Dol Amroth and talk about Elves.

Of Spices and Stewed Goat, by Rhymer
Faramir receives an unexpected visitor in the wilds of Ithilien, leading to an afternoon of wine, cooking and memories.

An Oath Fulfilled, by Rhymer
Lost in the darkness, the Dead have waited three thousand years for the Heir of Isildur to come to them, and now he is come. He is come.

Garnet and Gold, by Rhymer
Long after the end of the Fourth Age, a unique treasure is uncovered in what was once the Shire. This is the story of some of those who owned it, and why they cherished it, and how they passed it on.

Return to Moria by Erulisse (one L)
Legolas is getting ready to sail and has been invited to see Thranduil one final time. Taking Gimli with him, they ride to Moria following a route that Thranduil had suggested, but Moria holds many surprises for them. Gimli has a surprise as well, but is keeping it well hidden from his friend.

Messin about on the River - Linda Hoyland
Aragorn has a surprise for Faramir

A Hearty Meal by Linaewen
The men stationed at Gondor's Nardol beacon outpost prepare their evening meal.

Harsh Words by Linaewen
As Faramir prepares to depart for Osgiliath, he finds himself regretting the harsh words that have passed between himself and his father.

Thank you all for participating! And I hope everyone will come and check out the stories!

"Fanon is any element that is widely accepted among fans, but has little or no basis in canon." ~Fanlore wiki

The Tolkien fandom and fan fiction have existed for decades and, in that time, have accumulated their share of fanons. From much-beloved (but noncanonical) pairings, to aspects of a character's appearance, to traits and historical events of a specific group or family, we all regularly encounter and most of us use fanons in our own writing and art. For February's "February Fanon-buster" challenge, select a much-loved or much-loathed fanon and write a story that does the opposite of that fanon. Your element will be three random words to be included in the story.
The February challenge stories will be due Friday, February 14th and will be revealed on Sunday, February 16th. Please tag your story "fanon buster" and " '14 february". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page), and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line:

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com or virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com.
I hope we'll have lots of participants for our November challenge!

Title: Messin’ about on the River

When the weather is fine you know it's the time

For messin' about on the river

If you take my advice there's nothing so nice

As messin' about on the river

There's big boats and wee boats ands all kinds of craft

Puffers and keel boats and some with no raft

With the wind in your face there's no finer place

Than messin' about on the river – Hatch/Reed

2013 LOTR GFIC Yule Fic Exchange

We had a very successful exchange this year! Here are the links to the stories.

Plans for a Future Yule by Larner for Cathleen
It is not this Yule that truly interests Merry and Pippin so much as where they just might be celebrating the one next year!

Brothers by Keiliss for Burning Night
Near the end of the First Age, Maglor faces a decision that will change the future of the world.

Exile to Exile by Elleth for Dawn Felagund
After the Darkening not nearly all past resentments are extinguished, and Nerdanel begins to receive comfort from an unexpected source – and give some in return.

After two weeks in a healing sleep, Frodo and Sam have awakened at Cormallen.

Treasures by Linaewen for Iavalir
Dís receives a special gift from her childhood friend Balin.

The Assignment by Sivan Shemesh for Erulisse
If only Legolas knew how to say 'No!'

Waiting on the Wise by Rhymer for Linaewen
Boromir endured much hardship on his long journey to Rivendell. What comes after, in the quiet and safety of the House of Elrond, could prove yet harder to endure.

Cage of Light by Astris for Elleth
During the transition to Gondolin, Aredhel finds she is not the only one with doubts.

A Single Celebration - A Yule Exchange Fic by Erulisse (one L)for astris_eldalie
The habit of grand celebrations for all natal days within the royal family has started to get out of hand. Nerdanel has a suggestion, but it is up to Fëanáro and Lord Manwë to make the changes happen that will allow private parties to become socially acceptable once again.

There and Back Again by Shirebound for Larner
The birth of Sam and Rosie’s tenth child triggers a strong reaction in Sam, but Merry and Pippin wonder if there might be something going on more unusual than anyone realizes.

Daytracer by Dawn Felagund for Wheelrider
After the Darkening of Valinor, the Aulendur struggle to find a way to bear aloft the final fruit and flower of the Two Trees. Nerdanel finds a unexpected ally in Arien, who helps her discover the secret knowledge that will return the world to light.

A Gift For Yule by Burning Night for Keiliss
Glorfindel helps a young lady with a puzzling question.

The Greatest Gift of All by Rhapsody for Sivan (pinch hit)
Arwen's late arrival in Rivendell causes quite a consternation.

The King of the Dead by Wheelrider for Rhymer
The Dead are restless, but it is the living who lead them.

Fairy Lights by Iavalir for Dreamflower

Hi all,

we just wanted to give you a heads up as to why our archive, Many Paths To Tread, is down at the moment. Our host has reported that they have issues regarding their data center's network connectivity and many sites hosted by them are down at the moment. They have a team of admins working on as we speak, so hopefully full service will be restored later this day.

The site is back up!

Request: I'd love a story about young Bilbo having a Yule holiday with his parents, Bungo and Belladonna. Could be at home in Bag End, or could be visiting kinfolk at the Great Smials. Any age from infancy to coming-of-age; could be funny, fluffy or serious; whatever floats your boat.
Author's notes: One of the riddles is taken from chapter “Riddles in the Dark.”
